Date

2017

Location

Long Beach Island, New Jersey, USA

A residential project on the beaches of Long Beach Island takes full advantage of the ocean views by utilizing architectural forms that resemble the conch shell, a symbol of New Jersey. The project consists of four distinct structures arranged around a central living space with a ship-like quality that captures the essence of the Jersey Shore. Each interior, painted in a different shade of color, reflects its specific function. The building is elevated eleven feet above sea level on columns, with a space below designated as a carport. A staircase and ramp lead to the second-floor living area and the rooftop viewing platform. The overall form of the residence evokes an ancient, sea-like quality. Its exterior is clad in a metallic iridescent membrane, allowing the sunlight to create an array of colors as it strikes the surface from different angles. The concept behind the project embodies a sense of reverence and tranquility associated with marine life, with nautical themes incorporated intuitively. The central open space extends outward, forming a land bridge that connects each conch shell-inspired structure. The design blurs the lines between floors, walls, and ceilings, creating a slightly disorienting but engaging experience. The arrangement of each form has a balance between private and public spaces, ultimately aiming to inspire awe through a single, sensuous curve.
