Destiny's Bridge

Project type

Mixed-Use / Housing

Date

2016

Location

Howell Township, New Jersey, USA

Destiny's Bridge is a project inspired by a documentary about a homeless encampment in Lakewood, New Jersey. The goal to create architecturally sustainable housing would appeal to both the individuals in need and the political officials who run the township. Retrofitted shipping containers create twelve dwellings, a community center, and a chapel. Each building type represents a different shape: triangle, circle, and square. The community center, designed as a bridge that houses all community functions, is constructed on the ground. The dwellings, each housing two individuals, are situated above the ground. The chapel, used for group activities, is located below the ground with a canted roof rising to the west. The project aims to provide a transitional living environment that encourages community cooperation with a sustainable model. The natural wooded site offers the inhabitants a source of healing as they work towards regaining dignity and self-love.
