Consulate of Lebanon

Location

Detroit, MI, USA

Project type

Civic / Governmental

The Consulate of Lebanon, strategically located near downtown Detroit, boldly integrates elements inspired by the Cedars of Lebanon, featuring a geometric layout that enhances its architectural significance. Cedarwood is extensively used to create structural elements and furniture throughout the consulate, establishing an identity. The arrangement and color scheme effectively reflect the importance of each function. Cedarwood constructs a striking colonnade for the skylights, symbolizing the majestic Cedar Forests of Lebanon. Staff areas are robustly built with concrete blocks, while an eye-catching red metallic bridge—designed with fenestration reminiscent of a cedar tree—connects to a unique curved floating structure that houses the Consulate General. For utmost privacy and security, the consulate features an emergency stairwell and a submerged parking lot that provide discreet access for staff and the Consul General. The outdoor spaces, adorned with gardens, mirror the textures of Lebanon, and the building's sharp angles powerfully symbolize the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Moreover, the consulate boasts a library that serves as a resource for visitors seeking to research and understand Lebanese history and is a venue for public meetings and community events. The mission of this complex is clear: to raise awareness of the Lebanese community and to fortify their presence in the United States, thereby creating a bridge between Lebanon and the Americas.
