Ferry Terminal

Location

Penn's Landing, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Date

1998

Project type

Maritime / Transportation

The Penn's Landing Ferry Terminal, a vital connection between Camden, New Jersey, and the Philadelphia waterfront along the Delaware River, is strategically located near the Benjamin Franklin Bridge adjacent to the Seaport Museum. Penn's Landing boasts a stunning promenade that enhances the visitor experience. This terminal proudly commemorates William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, who landed here in 1682. The architecture features a striking wing-like structure that is partially open-air, angled upward from the shoreline to harness prevailing winds effectively. Inside, a ticket booth with temperature-controlled queuing ensures a comfortable experience, complemented by seating featuring transparent walls. The roof is a lightweight, photovoltaic embedded laminate glass supported by a robust aluminum structural system. The uninterrupted promenade invites pedestrians to walk freely beneath the impressive wing, while its design harmonizes seamlessly with the Seaport Museum. The angled shape boldly represents, in metaphor, the quill pen used in signing the Declaration of Independence, highlighting the terminal's cultural significance.
