L.B.I. Beach House

Location

Harvey Cedars, L.B.I., New Jersey, USA

Date

2007

Project type

Residential

The beach house at Harvey Cedars, Long Beach Island, New Jersey, is expertly engineered to withstand extreme coastal weather, including flooding and hurricane-force winds. The design alludes to organic plant structures, particularly from the ginger family, emphasizing nature's influence. An innovative curved facade effectively channels wind over the structure, significantly reducing lateral loads. Robust tripod columns, elevated eleven feet, made from precast concrete, protect the house from flooding and offer spectacular ocean views. The interior showcases striking curved furniture that harmonizes with the fluid lines of the walls, featuring cutouts designed for windows. Wheelchair ramps are incorporated, ensuring full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Glass mullions reinforce each glass panel, eliminating the necessity for metal or wood frames, and enhancing the aesthetic. The anodized metallic skin envelops the rooftop and walls, while the wood flooring creates a cohesive and continuous surface throughout the interior. The kitchen and bathroom fixtures boast a simple yet sophisticated nautical design reminiscent of charter boats within the shipping industry.
