Location

Rua Visconde de Pirajá, Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil

Date

2007

Project type

Retail / Apartment

The Edifício Maçã, situated on the main avenue in Ipanema, addresses a significant housing need, particularly targeting the demand for medium-sized, one-bedroom apartments. Located on a distinctive corner lot, the building showcases three exposed facades, which enhance its visibility and feature sculptural elements made of steel mesh veils attached to curved brackets. This artistic design gives the building the appearance of a Red Delicious apple. The conceptual design emphasizes an open-plan, transparent structure, and a fritted metallic screen that protects residents from solar heat gain while providing a layer of security and privacy. The framework employs a gridded system with cross-tension struts and features fixed floor-to-ceiling glass for windows, with operable casement windows seamlessly integrated within the glass system. This structural grid is visually articulated on the walls, floors, and ceilings providing a striking contrast to the polished gray concrete floor inlays. Inside, Brazilian cherry wood cabinetry and fixtures create a sense of continuity and contrast beautifully with the stark structural elements. The rooftop includes a garden space equipped with integrated benches and planters, with amenities such as a jacuzzi and barbecue area for tenants to enjoy. On the ground floor, a pedestrian-friendly space opens to the street, featuring a juice bar within its footprint.
